Are you getting an error message? When I get the big X it usually has an error message with it. Either "file too big" if it's over 5MB or "wrong format" if it's not PNG, GIF, or JPG

Maybe it's just me but it's proving very difficult to login to the main site at the moment. I managed to get through after about 10 mins of trying. Just a lot of "hanging". It was easy to login here...
