So, if I am just a guest user, then when I click browse, all images are available from my computer to be uploaded. When I am a registered user, none of my images are available from my computer (all greyed out). Clearly its not a browser issue, just doesn't work as a registered user.

I'm having the identical problem too: both with Safari and with Firefox.

Exactly the same problem here. Any chance this will be fixed? Or are you having enough trouble already with the windows users? :D
